Why your garage door makes that awful noise and how to fix it before it breaks

Think about how many times a day you press that little button on your visor. Your garage door is likely the biggest moving object in your entire house, opening and closing thousands of times a year. Yet, most of us completely ignore it until that dreaded morning when it groans, shudder, and refuses to budge, leaving your car trapped right when you are already running late for work.

Taking care of your garage door doesn’t mean you need a degree in engineering. With just a little bit of attention when the seasons change, you can avoid expensive emergency repair bills and keep everything running quietly. Let’s dive into a simple, straightforward routine to protect this heavy piece of machinery all year round.

Spring: The Great Post-Winter Reset

When the weather finally starts to warm up, it is time to shake off the winter blues and check on the toll the freezing cold took on your system. Freezing temperatures can harden lubrication and cause metal parts to shrink slightly, which puts extra stress on the motor.

First, grab a broom and sweep out all the cobwebs, dirt, and salt buildup that accumulated near the tracks and sensors over the winter. Take a close look at the cables and springs. Are they looking rusty or frayed. If anything looks worn down, that’s your cue to call in a professional, because those springs are under massive tension and can be dangerous to mess with yourself.

Summer: Beating the Heat and Humidity

Summer brings its own set of problems, mainly intense heat and high humidity. If you have a wooden garage door, the moisture in the air can make the wood swell, causing it to rub against the frame. Even metal doors can suffer if the sun beats down on them all day, heating up the internal parts.

During these months, check the weatherstripping—the rubber seal along the bottom of the door. If it is cracked or letting light through, hot air and summer bugs are sneaking into your home. Replacing a worn seal is a cheap, twenty-minute project that saves you money on your cooling bills.

Fall: Prepping for the Cold Months Ahead

Fall is the absolute most important time for garage door upkeep. You want to get everything prepped before the freezing wind and snow arrive. Start by tightening all the nuts and bolts. Because a garage door vibrates so much when it moves, things naturally loosen up over time.

Next, test the balance of your door. Disconnect the automatic opener by pulling the red emergency release cord, then try lifting the door halfway up by hand. If it stays in place, your springs are working perfectly. If it crashes back down or shoots upward, the balance is off, and your opener is working way too hard.

Winter: Keeping Freezing Temperatures at Bay

Winter is notoriously brutal on automated doors. Ice can trap the bottom rubber seal to the concrete driveway, and if you hit the opener button while it’s frozen shut, you risk burning out the motor or tearing the rubber right off.

Always clear away snow and ice from the base of the door before opening it. If you notice the door is moving slower than usual, the grease in the tracks might be frozen solid. Wipe down the tracks with a clean rag to remove old, gunky grease and apply a fresh coat of silicone-based spray that won’t freeze up when the thermometer drops.

The All-Season Lubrication Trick

No matter what month it is, keeping things lubricated is the secret to a quiet garage. A loud, squeaking door isn’t just annoying; it’s crying out for help. But don’t just grab a can of standard WD-40, because that actually attracts dust and grime, which makes the problem worse over time.

Instead, buy a can of specialized garage door lubricant or silicone spray. Spray a light layer onto the metal rollers, hinges, and the track. Doing this just twice a year will drastically extend the lifespan of your system and make your garage operations whisper-quiet.

Every modern garage door has safety features built in to prevent it from crushing objects or people. Testing these features is something every homeowner should do at least a couple of times a year. It only takes a minute and provides immense peace of mind.

Lay a solid block of wood or a brick on the ground right where the door closes. Press the button to close it. The moment the door touches the wood, it should immediately stop and reverse back up. If it keeps pressing down, your safety sensors need to be re-adjusted or replaced immediately.

Taking care of your garage door doesn’t require a weekend-long project or fancy tools. By spending just fifteen minutes every few months checking the balance, wiping down the tracks, and spraying a little lubricant, you can prevent major headaches down the road.

Keep your eyes and ears open for any strange noises or jerky movements. Catching a small problem in October can save you from a broken door in January. Your garage door works hard for you every single day, so give it a little love, and it will keep rolling smoothly for years to come.
